Punctuated Equilibrium is a collection of poetry from my journal dating from June of 2008 through March of 2010. The title I have given to that journal is Turmoil and Transformation.

In the words of the Wiki Punctuated equilibrium is a theory in evolutionary biology which proposes that most sexually reproducing species will experience little evolutionary change for most of their geological history, remaining in an extended state called stasis. When evolution occurs, it is localized in rare, rapid events of branching speciation, called cladogenesis. Cladogenesis is the process by which species split into two distinct species, rather than one species gradually transforming into another. Thus, punctuated equilibria is a model for discontinuous tempos of change (in) the process of speciation and the deployment of species in geological time.

In my own words, this theory is basically one explanation of how evolution occurs. Instead of being a slow process that takes thousands of years, Punctuated Equilibrium is the premise that one severe event occurs forcing a species to undergo a rapid change to survive, usually in a decade or less. Most often, it would be a change in the surrounding environment and the creature has to “adapt” or die.

I have adopted this theory for my own purpose and twist the meaning to explain this span of time in my life. When I refer to my Punctuated Equilibrium, I am speaking about the rapid evolution I have undergone that was triggered by a series of dramatic events. The first of these happened in June of 2008 and it was the first time in many years that I was driven to journal. The transformation that I endured is therefore captured in fairly granular detail in those pages and the resulting poetry are some of my favorites to date. I consider the end of that journal to be in March of 2010 when my divorce was final. It was at that time, I felt I had survived the metamorphosis and was ready to begin anew.
